quite often, when i’m learning a new piece of software, i’ll create a piece or series of pieces on it to explore how i might get interesting and hopefully unique results.

this was the case in the mid 00s when i encountered ableton live. at first, it was hard to wrap my head around, but with some very kindly offered lessons from the NY ableton office, i was off and running. i created a few pieces, trying to leverage the fantastic way things can be assembled, edited, and organized within the “live” ecosystem. the intention at the time was to add melodic material into this to try and make a “song” out of it.

for some reason i can’t recall anymore, about 6 years ago, i decided to tack an intro onto one of those pieces, to try and make a new 2 movement idea that isn’t so much “song” as “electronic dance piece” using pro tools (i was probably testing a VI ….).

when the opportunity came along to participate in the sonicstate project, it was described initially as having to be completed extremely quickly, with an expected release date mere weeks from the initial conversation. i went looking back through some of the things i had “laying around”, and i came across this piece, and decided that with a little massaging, it would fit the bill.

i re-examined the intro bits i’d done, making some corrections and additions, and re-mastered the 2-track piece that i’d created in ableton. the mix you hear is the result of those various sessions. everything is played, programmed, engineered, and mixed by me either at le crib studio or here at my house across a span of about 15 years in 2 different locations.
